Well I heard some people say they're music geniuses, and so

Guess Who

I'm nobody, who are you?
Are you nobody too?
Then, there's a pair of us!Don't tell!
They'd advertise, you know!
How dreary to be somebody!
How public--like a frog.
To tell one's name the livelong june.
To an admiring bog!

More final arrangments . . . *SIGH*

I did well on the weekend, indeed, finishing "In a United State," "Thinking of Learning," and "Glorious Cacophony" arrangements. They sound schweet! Today and through Sunday I'll be tackling final versions of "Traditions," "International Day," tweaking the arrangement of "Gypsies Are. . .", and maybe making other small adjustments here and there if I have time. And then . . . the overture!!
Soon the crew will begin posting their fascinating reports, so stay tuned.
Thai Wang did a lovely redo of the poster, and picky me, I'm nearly satisfied. Wish there were a Chinese title, and a reflection on the crystal ball, but. . .that's me.
The chorus is doing better and better, and so are the other singers. The actors' practice I saw last Wednesday was promising, too, so here's hopin' it's a grand show.
Anything you want to ask the cast or crew? Let us know here.

Making Final Arrangements?

Hello all, Chris here. I've sworn to finish the arrangements for all the show's songs this weekend. . .for the fourth weekend in a row! But I think it will be done this time.
Today I finished two whole songs: "Thinking of Learning" and "In a United State."
Tomorrow, a big day: "Glorious Cacophony" (partly finished now), "Traditions" (started), "International Day" (finishing up), and tweaking "Gypsies Are" and possibly improving my own version of "I Need to Talk to You" (the band plays its own arrangement, but I still like mine best).
Also I want to finish the overture soon--but let's be realistic here! The other tunes would be QUITE enough for one day of slaving over hot software.
These songs will be ready for you to enjoy from the Parts Page and from Studeous, if you're a cast member of part of the backstage team; otherwise, there's only a month left till you can hear the whole show! (Geez Louise! Better get crackin'!)
Tomorrow the band will play "New Class Clown," or at least they said they would. They played both "Heroine" and "I Need to Talk to You" in fairly good sounding arrangements last weekend. I'm not sure WHOSE arrangements they are but it at least sounds listenable, if not what I had in mind. . .(*sigh*)
Hope you're all doing well. I was singing along with "In a United State" just now and it sounds sweet!!

Progress Reports

Well, we've been gradually learning our parts and beginning work on the backstage details. It appears that the band will be much less active in our performance than originally planned. These hardworking volunteers have a lot on their respective plates! So part of the accompaniment will be live, while other parts will need to be prerecorded. Hope I'm up to it! The chorus is sounding better and better and I believe they are getting more confident. They are even volunteering for solos! That's great.
We will be practicing on Nov. 24th in the Student Center Theater for the first time. Expect delays! The actors are supposed to be "off book" by Nov. 17th--that means they may no longer hold the script during practices. Ergo, they have to have their parts memorized! A big challenge for some characters, you bet! These people are making excellent suggestions for minor cuts to the script--and I want to encourage that!
The performance, it seems, will be on December 30th. Not much time remains to us and I still have not seen any backstage work such as costumes, sets, props, sound effects, etc. I hope these are nearly ready!
Soon I hope to have some guest posts by backstage leaders, actors, singers, and such. That should be good reading!
I myself am nearly exhausted. Too much pressure and too many projects!!
"Break a leg" everybody! (That means that I wish you the best of luck; we don't say "g**d luck" in the theatre!)
The poster looks pretty good, right? However, there are still some suggestions I have. Also, my name is wrong. . . comments?

Audition Day Survived. . .

Well, the day has come and gone. Most of the technical positions have already been filled, with lots of thanks to the new Assistant Director (AD) Wayne Wang! These will soon be posted.
For performers, we find too few students for too many positions. Changes of some sort will have to be made. However, we had about 14 people who wanted to play parts and though that' s short by about 6 characters, we may be able to make it work. We had some good singers come out and I think the songs will sound great coming out of their throats. Now if we had some live musicians for the band. . . !
I want to offer a nice bonus to anyone in the class that can get us a promising lead for musicians for the band: at least a drummer, a keyboardist, a guitarist (both electric and acoustic) and a bassist.
If necessary, I'll just do the music myself on the computer but we'd lack the excitement of a live band badly!
Thanks to everyone who signed up. Please get other friends who are good at singing and also at playing instruments to sign up by Friday. . .or it will be too late. Thanks in particular to those who came out for the English drama despite not being English majors. Sorry, most material is in English now, but we'll try to work with you anyway.
I have to ask some people to come back again to sing or act so I can make good casting decisions. Will try to post the cast list and crew by Friday or Saturday.
Best to all! Good show.
Chris

Auditions are just around the (weekend) corner!

The Crystal Auditions page--after much new work--is about complete. The general audition songs and scripts are in place and most of the other songs, too. I've recorded my gruff voice singing most of the solo audition pieces, just in case anyone wants to use them. I've moved the MP3s to "adrive.com" instead of "soundclick" because of the troubles we experienced on Monday. Hope these work smoothly for you!
If these songs are too low or high for you, please let me know; I can move the key down or up to suit you, hopefully.
Please read through all the stuff that is available and try to get an idea of the story and characters before Monday.
Please also remember to fill in the pre-audition survey, and also
  1. Enroll in our class at Studeous
  2. Get Celtx
  3. Upload a blank project from within Celtx, choosing a username and password in the process
  4. Send me your username, preferably from within Studeous to protect it from the world's eyes
I will share the script and songs with you from within Celtx/Project Central.
Ask if you need any help or information! Have fun.

And please. . .help me get in touch with musicians for the band!!!!
Also. . .please get your friends, particularly those who are good singers, actors, and dancers, to join the class and attend the auditions on Monday! Help them to get the information they will need for auditions.
Thank you all so much for joining the drama and helping to make my 'dream' of having my own musical come true! You will be smashing!
Chris

More audition material coming!

Hello there! At the Crystal Auditions page I've posted more material. I've got the audition piece that both Crystal and Lucinda will use, "Heroine." The version I've posted is not complete in its accompaniment, but the vocals will probably not change--or, not change much. It's enough to start getting ready with. Also, the choral music for the small ensemble, "A True Friend Like You," is posted. The bass part is the trickiest one.
The whole song "I Need to Talk to You" as well as "Gypsies Are. . ." (the two big songs for student character solos, especially for Shirley, Louise, Denny, and Bethany (the main singing students, as Charity has less to sing and could even be a non-singing character if necessary)), are ready and will be posted very soon, probably tomorrow.
Everyone except those who are trying for the chorus specifically should learn "New Class Clown," which is also ready and will be posted along with the other finished material. The instrumentals are not ready yet but the vocals are rarin' to go. Should be a good tune.
I'm teaching my daughter to sing the soprano parts and getting my sister to have a go at the alto ones, and I'll try recording the tenor and bass parts in the coming week so students can hear all this stuff sung, in case that is easier for you to work with than the MIDI files. Also, some of the chorus's MIDI solo material is in an instrument that isn't too suitable, so I'll replace those this weekend.
PLEASE someone get ready and make this hard work worthwhile for me!
Chris

Script and Materials Updated at Celtx!

Hi everyone!
The script has been updated with a new file located here.
It is now called "Crystal Development" and it's much smaller in size; the old one was picking up a lot of old files I didn't need anymore and it was 12 MB in size; the new version is just 200k. Also, the choral vocal audition materials and also the scripts for all characters are posted at the Crystal Auditions page. Please sign up for Celtx and send your username soon! Get ready; auditions are in less than a month!

Audition Scripts Posted!

Hi everyone. Actors, the scripts for all characters are posted now at the auditions page. Some of the minor characters will be auditioned in groups, so I have "student" scripts. I hope this will help you to be well prepared for the auditions on September 29th! That was earlier than I had expected!
I'm finishing up drafts of "I Need to Talk to You" and "Gypsies Are..." Will attach to the Celtx project when they reach full draft stage.
Chris

Chorus: Your vocal audition material is ready!

I've posted the material for two songs that the potential members of the chorus will sing on Sept. 29th for their auditions. I have parts for sopranos, altos, tenors, and basses: both the music and the printed score. The songs are "Thinking of Learning" and "In a United State." Please get the music and start to learn it if you want to join the chorus. I think it would be good to get an idea of who can dance and who can't, too. If you want to be the dance captain, pick a song from the Celtx file and get one ready to do at auditions.
I'll work soon on other songs for other characters. The biggest singing parts are Crystal, Nikki, and Lucinda. The most important supporting singers are the students Louise, Shirley, Bethany, Denny, Oliver, and Andrea. There are a bunch of smaller solos, too.
I'll also prepare scripts for the speaking characters to learn. They may need to learn lines in dialogue. You can hold your script during auditions if you need to, but I'd be impressed if you don't need to. . . :-)
More as it becomes available. . . !
I've finished the words for "Traditions" and you can see them in the Celtx file. Please send any comments or suggestions you might have, cast!
Best wishes
Chris

Overture. . .House lights down. . .

Hello cast and crew, this is Chris O'Brien. This blog will document our experiences as we produce a new musical: Crystal.
Today I got most of the material for the lyrics to one of the key songs: "Traditions." It's a song that is sung by Lucinda, Crystal's mother. It introduces key points in Romani ("Gypsy") history and culture. I'm really looking for a strong alto singer for this character!
I'm working on cuts for the script now; I know it's too long as it is in its draft form, so I'm identifying what can safely be cut without disfiguring the story.
I calculated the song lengths and I estimate that there'll be about 58 minutes of songs in the show. I hope to keep the entire show down to 90-110 minutes, so there may be some cuts necessary in the songs as well. I'll see what I can do.
Otherwise, most of the script is done and most of the songs are in a full draft form--with the vocals more or less finished, though the instrumentation is still in development.
I'm preparing for auditions these days, too. I've got MIDI files for all the different parts--with and without accompaniment--for the two choral song fragments that we'll be using, and I'll finish posting that material real soon.
Best to you all!!
Chris

Where is everything kept?

Hi, everyone. Not that anyone's been reading this yet, but maybe soon . . . !

I am keeping the files for everyone to access as the play develops. This will tell you where to find different stuff.

AT PROJECT CENTRAL (CELTX): (see my "Favorite Links" on the Studeous class page for lots of information on how to use this!)

  • the latest musical MIDI files (instrumental versions of the songs)

Please also note that the MIDI files provided at the moment are mostly full-length versions, but they are only finished in their vocal aspects; the accompaniment still needs to be filled in for most of the songs. I wanted to get a clear idea of how long in duration each song will be, so I completed the vocals first. The accompaniment will make the songs sound a lot better, I believe.

  • The script--the very freshest version is always kept as part of the current Celtx download.
  • Lists of characters, crew members, songs, scenes, props, etc. (as "catalogs")
  • Progress Reports (through pdf files created at TODOIST.com)
    • These show checkboxes next to each task I've set for myself. The ones that are completed are shown with an X in the box, while the ones that are not yet done are still blank inside. The colors are not really important to you, but they are meaningful to me. . .
  • NOTE: the Celtx file is being updated very often these days as I make new progress. You may have to update ("download"') the new version from the server every time you use Celtx, as the latest version will be different in some ways. Sorry if that's inconvenient, but I am just loving the creation of this project and I'm always thinking about it!

AT http://www.soundclick.com/crystalheirloom

  • MP3 files of the songs, for downloading or streaming. There are a few demo songs there already.
  • The vocal version of the beginning of "I Need to Talk to You" (it's on page 16 of the script PDF below) only has the words for verse one and part of the coda; after that point, the vocals sound awful and you will probably wish to press "stop" at that point. I'm trying to get a better mix. . .soon..
  • I will provide mp3 files of the audition pieces there too. My daughter Coral and I will sing the vocal parts as demonstrations; for the auditions, the accompaniment will be played and you will sing the vocal parts yourself.

AT STUDEOUS.COM's f08-DRAMA page

  • Miscellaneous other items will be kept at Studeous too.
  • Other things that are located elsewhere online will be listed with the other "favorite links" at the f08-DRAMA Studeous page, such as the list of what characters appear in what scenes--already available there in the list.

ALL THE MATERIAL FOR AUDITIONS...

...will be kept at the specific auditions page...no matter where the files are stored, the links will be all together there. It appears that I cannot store MIDI files at Studeous, for some reason.

I have already provided the chorus's material for one song, "Thinking of Learning." There are MIDI files for every combination I thought you might wish for there, as well as the printable music in notation form.

I'm working on the "Traditions" song (Act I scene 2, written as I-2) now and the lyrics are maybe halfway done.

Thanks for participating. I'm excited about the show. I just hope I can get quality musicians to work on the show!! We're in big trouble without enough singers and instrumentalists....

Chris
